Carlos Silva

Head of New Product Development at INCM (President)

Short Bio

Carlos has an Executive MBA from AESE Business School, a post graduate degree in information systems and a degree in management and public administration from the University of Lisbon.

Since 2016 he assumed the role of head of new product development at INCM  (Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office), one of Almascience’s main associates,  focusing on security printing and digital security solutions areas and on global product portfolio management.

With the launch Almascience, he assumed the role of CEO focusing on the set-up of this ambitious institution and on guaranteeing the onboarding of new industrial profile associates with relevant R&D challenges in line with Almascience’s R&D program and business development roadmap.

Previously, accumulated more than 10 years of experience in IT management and IT governance in the public sector, namely in the implementation and dissemination of IT shared services, which he helped transform into a bottom line contributing business area.

Elvira Fortunato

Vice-Rector for Research at Universidade Nova de Lisboa

Short Bio

Elvira Fortunato is Vice‐Rector at NOVA and Director of the Materials Research Center (CENIMAT) of the Associated Laboratory i3N, the Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodeling and Nanofabrication.
Elvira Fortunato pioneered European research on transparent electronics, namely thin-film transistors based on oxide semiconductors, demonstrating that oxide materials may be used as true semiconductors.

She is co-inventor of the paper electronics concept worldwide: Paper-e®. In 2008 she wins an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the project “Invisible” and in 2018 she received the second one ERC, with the amount of € 3.5 million. The project is entitled "Multifunctional Digital Materials Platform for Smart Integrated Applications | DIGISMART".

Her research team is exploring novel active properties in advanced and sustainable multifunctional materials, including oxides as well as novel electronic-active materials including alternative deposition methods, with the main objective of developing eco-friendly technologies and devices to be used and exploited in electronic circuits made of stable amorphous semiconductors able to serve large area smart flexible and conformable surface electronics.

She is an elected member of: Academy of Engineering (2008); European Academy of Sciences (2016); Lisbon Academy of Sciences (2017) and Academia Europaea (2019). She belongs to the Board of Trustees of the Luso‐American Development Foundation (2014).
Since 2016, she is one of the members of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors from the European Commission.

She is coordinating since 2019 at NOVA University the SPEAR project, an European platform for supporting and implementing plans for gender equality in academia and research.


Carlos Clara

CEO at Clara Saúde 

Short Bio

Carlos Clara is currently the CEO of Grupo Clara Saúde and Specialist Doctor in Clinical Pathology at the Labocentro laboratory.

He graduated in Medicine at the University of Coimbra in 1989 and later obtained the degree of Specialist in Clinical Pathology. He has completed several post graduation studies (Management of Health Units, Business Management) and is a trained quality control auditor. His professional path included positions as Director of Clinical Pathology Service (Centro Hospitalar Barreiro Montijo), a period in the Military Unit where he worked as a military General Physician and headed the Health Service and all its health support activity and teaching activity in different HEIs.

He collaborated(es) with several professional associations and organizations, namely he was the president of APOMEPA (Associação Portuguesa dos Médicos Patologistas ,2004 -2012), was the Vice-President of ANL (National Association of Laboratories, 2006 -2008), is member of AMGUS (Association of Medical Managers of Health Units) and Ambassador of the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health at the Centro Hospitalar Barreiro Montijo.

Carlos Pascoal Neto

General Director at RAIZ- Forest and Paper Research Institute 

Short Bio

Carlos Pascoal Neto, is Full Professor (“Professor Catedrático”) of the University of Aveiro (UA) and RAIZ / The Navigator Company, Director.

He started his academic career in 1992. On October 2015, he left the University of Aveiro to join The Navigator Company (former Portucel Soporcel Group), as General Director of RAIZ – Forest and Paper Research Institute, the R&D Centre of the Company.

He has been Vice-Rector of the University of Aveiro for Cooperation with Society, Innovation, Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship (2010-2015). Formerly, he has been Director of the Chemistry Department of UA (2007-2010). Carlos teaching and research activities at UA have been focused on Forest Products Chemistry and Technology.

He is graduated in Chemistry by UA, “Docteur” (PhD) by the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG), France, and has the“Agregação” degree in Chemistry by UA.


Pedro Almeida

Group Leader of NBD & Finance at Fraunhofer Portugal

Short Bio

With a professional career that comprises the full innovation cycle, from initial R&D activities to the creation of a spin-off company the University of Aveiro, Pedro Almeida holds a MSc in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering by the University of Aveiro, and holds a post-graduation in Advanced Management for Executives also from the same university.

From 2000 to 2007 he was a researcher at IEETA – Institute of Electronics and Telematics Engineering of Aveiro, and was involved in several research projects related e-Government and e-Content activities. From 2006 to 2012 he was Independent Expert Evaluator of the eContentPlus and CIP ICT PSP Policy Support Programme for the European Commission. From 2007 to 2012 he was the CEO of a spin-off Software Company of the University of Aveiro and, during this period, he participated in several national industry research projects related with ICT, e-Government and digital media.

Nowadays he is member of the Executive Board of Associação Fraunhofer Portugal Research and Group Leader of the Finance Department, Invited Professor at the University of Aveiro, President of Inova-Ria, President of CER Aveiro and Member of the Board of TICE.PT.

Rodrigo Martins

Short Bio

Rodrigo Martins is Full Professor of Faculty of Sciences and Technology of New University of Lisbon (FCT-NOVA), Portugal and the running President of the European Academy of Sciences as well as the nominated President of the International Union of Materials Research Societies for the period 2021-2023.

He is member of several boards and associations (Portuguese Academy of Engineering, Portuguese Order of Engineers, EIT KIC Raw Materials).

He founded and is the director of the Centre of Excellence in Microelectronics and Optoelectronics Processes of Uninova, being also the leader of the Materials, Optoelectronics and Nanotechnologies group of I3N/CENIMAT.

He is expert in the field of advanced functional materials, nanotechnologies, microelectronics, transparent electronics and paper electronics, with more than 570 papers published in WoK and has editorial and reviewing activity in many Q1 journals.

Rodrigo Martins has been involved in the pioneer European research on amorphous silicon semiconductors and is a pioneer - together with his group - in worldwide activity related to passive and active oxides, the so called transparent electronics and he is one of the inventors of the so-called paper electronics, where paper is exploited not only as a substrate but also as a functional component in active devices.

He got more than 17 international and national prizes and distinctions for his work (e.g.: gold medal of merit and distinction by the Almada Municipality, 2016; Lisbon Energy Live Expo, Innovation prize, 2012 (Solar tiles); European Patent Office Innovation nomination 2016 (paper electronics); Exame Informática Innovation prize 2016 (paper solar cells).

Liliana Ferreira

Short Bio

Liliana Ferreira is the director of the Fraunhofer Research Center for Assistive Information and Communication Solutions (AICOS) in Portugal and Full Professor Invited at Department of Informatics of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.

Her research focuses mainly on the areas of Natural Language Processing, Medical Knowledge Representation, Information Extraction, and Health Informatics. Liliana holds a degree in Applied Mathematics and Technology by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (2002), an MSc in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Aveiro (2005), and a Ph.D. in Informatics (2011) also from the University of Aveiro, Portugal.

Liliana has developed her research in industry and research organizations as Philips Research Eindhoven (NL), IBM Research and Development Böblingen (DE), the Institute of Electronics and Telematics Engineering of Aveiro (PT), the Ubiquitous Knowledge Lab of the Technical University of Darmstadt (DE) and the University of Tübingen (DE).


Silvia Garcia

Short Bio

Silvia Garcia, is Head of the Innovation Lab at INCM (Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office). 

She holds a Ph.D. in Biotechnology with a post graduate degree in industrial management and a degree in chemical engineering from FCT-NOVA.

She has more than 10 years of experience in industry, regarding her experience in coordination and execution of R&DI and engineering projects. In the last years she has been working on the innovation field, focused in developing ideas and its implementation through multidisciplinary R&DI projects (national and international) in order to promote new technological areas.

During its activity she has been supervising PhD students and master's degree, as company adviser, and reviewing scientific articles for peer reviewed journals.

Tatiana Lima Costa

Innovation, IP and Funding Manager

Short Bio

Tatiana Lima Costa is the Innovation, IP and Funding Manager at AlmaScience. She holds a PhD in Biochemistry (University of Aveiro, UA), a Post-Graduation in Industrial Property Law (University of Lisbon) .

For the past 5 ½ years, she worked as Science and Technology Manager/Funding Advisor at the Research Support Office of UA, mainly supporting pre-award, post-award/project management and internationalization activities.

Previously she integrated UA technology transfer office (2011-2014), where she dealt with intellectual property issues, knowledge and technology transfer and University-enterprise cooperation.

During the last years she has been invited for lecturing on different courses and has been collaborating with the European Commission as independent expert as well as with the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA) and its UK counterpart ( ARMA).

She has also interest in research in the field of Research Management, Technology Transfer, Entrepreneurship, Technology and Innovation Management, Science and Innovation Politics, University- Enterprise Relations.

Senior Researchers

Marta Lopes

Short Bio

Marta Lopes is a Senior Researcher at AlmaScience on paper manufacturing. She has a PhD in Chemistry, in the field of structural characterization of lignocellulosic materials.

Later, she worked as a Post-Doc Research Fellow at the University of Aveiro in solid state NMR characterization of zeolites. In late 2001, she joined Celbi Pulp Mill, former StoraEnso unit and later Altri unit, where she developed applied research related with kraft pulping, pulp bleaching and papermaking properties.

Between 2017 and 2019, she worked as R&D Project Manager at RISE INNVENTIA (Sweden) in process simulation and techno-economic evaluation of new value chains integrated with pulp mills, such as production of regenerated cellulose fibers for textiles, cellulose nanofibrils for paper and lignin-based biofuels.

Her current interests are paper engineering and cellulose functionalization for sustainable applications in paper electronics, biosensors and energy harvesters.

Cristina Gaspar

Short Bio

Cristina Gaspar is a Senior Researcher at AlmaScience on Printed Electronics. She received her PhD in the field of Printed Intelligence, from Aalto University, with work performed at VTT Research Institute, mainly focusing on developing mass manufactured printed components and devices, using cellulose-based substrates and tailored functional inks.

Currently, at Cemop, Portugal, she has been working as a researcher at the FunPaper lab, following the same line of research.

Her main interests are related with using printing technologies as tools for fast prototyping, together with green inks, creating more sustainable and environmentally friendly devices, for various applications, such as paper diagnostics, wearables, smart packaging, among others.


Diana Gaspar

Short Bio

Diana Gaspar is a Senior Researcher at AlmaScience on paper electronics. 

She has a PhD on Advanced Materials and Processing ; whose topic was cellulose-based substrates for applications in electronic devices.

Moreover, she was a researcher in the CENIMAT/i3N (FCT-NOVA) and CEMOP (since 2009), with particular focus on materials development and paper electronics, being involved in activities related to the production of paper transistors and electronic circuitry on paper.

Her current interests are on oxide-based thin films (ZnO-based, In-based and In-free), paper and flexible electronics and solid-state electrolytes and their integration in devices.

João Resende

Short Bio

Dr. Joao Resende is a Senior Researcher on Materials for Electronics at AlmaScience.

His main research is focused on new materials for microelectronics and energy harvesting technologies, aiming to improve the human development in a sustainable way. 

Previously, he developed functional transparent materials, as oxide semiconductors and emergent metal based electrodes, for light detection and emission devices.


Sumita Goswami

Short Bio

Sumita Goswami is a Senior Researcher at AlmaScience with the principal responsibility of developing building blocks for cellulose based smart electronics. 

She is a materials researcher with more than 10 years of admirable research experience. She did her Ph.D.(2014) from Jadavpur University (India) in the field of Materials Science and Nanotechnology.

During her research career (including Post-Doc in CENIMAT|i3N group of Portugal), she has published in several high-impact peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of the ISI and worked for several international and national projects. 

She has competences on: Development, processing and functionalization of polymer materials and its hybrids/composites (nanostructures or thin films) on any kind of substrates using solution based cost-effective methods; Designing polymeric materials for multifunctional applications like energy harvester, sensors, data storage, supercapacitor, TFT, electrorheology; Developing and designing devices/prototypes for Wearables and Paper based electronics while projecting sustainable green technology and Zero E-Waste Challenge; Characterizing and analysing relevant process data and identifying scientific/technological solutions to process problems.

Bruno Veigas

Short Bio

Bruno Veigas is a Senior Researcher at AlmaScience focused on the development of cellulose-based biosensing schemes, with a special emphasis on multiplexed, on-site-enabled technologies for early detection/screening of diseases.  

For the past 10 years he has been trying to incorporate novel concepts in biosensing and biomimetic architectures into molecular diagnostics platforms.

 His research has been pioneering at the interface between molecular genetics, nanomedicine and microelectronics. 

Some of these concepts have been focused on the development of electrochemical-based real-time gene expression methods for cancer diagnostics, nanotechnology-based infectious disease detection technologies, nano-optical principles for early detection of autoimmune diseases; together with the development of traditional and digital microfluidic devices and their application for DNA detection.


Renato Costa

Short Bio

Renato Costa is a Senior Researcher at AlmaScience focused on Electronics. 

He has a master's degree in electronics and computers ( ISEL) . He has more than 18 years of study and hands-on in electronics, including 12 years of professional experience.

He worked for the last 9 years at an aerospace company where he developed electronic devices for space applications.

His expertise is related with designing low noise and high stability analogue circuits as well as  digital/embedded devices based on FPGA's and microcontrollers.

Andreia dos Santos

Short Bio

Andreia dos Santos is a Junior Researcher at AlmaScience focused in Sensor Development.

She is a biomedical engineer and is finishing her PhD from the MIT-Portugal Doctoral Program. She developed skills related to the production (micro-structuration based in laser engraving, synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles, and thin films production through spin-coating, spray coating, and electron-beam evaporation), and morphological (scanning electron microscopy, profilometry, and contact angle measurement) and electrical characterization of pressure sensors, temperature sensors, and energy harvesters.

Catarina Fernandes

Short Bio

Catarina Fernandes is a Junior Researcher at AlmaScience focused in Sensor Development .

She was born in Lisbon, and obtained her graduation in Chemical and Biochemical Engineer at the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade  NOVA de Lisboa (FCT/UNL).   Her background experience was at industry, where Catarina was engineering project designer, and she was also involved in the certification process, based on the implementation of the Integrated Management System.


Mariana Matias

Short Bio

Mariana Matias is a Junior Researcher at AlmaScience in printed electronics . She was born in Covilhã and obtained her Master's degree in Micro and Nanotechnologies Engineering at the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCT/UNL), Portugal in 2019.

She worked as a researcher at CENIMAT. She has experience in the production of nanoparticles with solvothermal synthesis assisted by microwave and in the development of inks with nanoparticles for printing by different methods on paper substrate.

Nuno Ferreira

Short Bio

Nuno Ferreira, is a Junior Researcher at AlmaScience in Materials for Electronics.

He was born and raised in Oeiras (Portugal), has finished his master’s degree in Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology from the NOVA University at the end of 2018.

Right after finished the degree, published a paper regarding the work done in his master’s thesis. Later in 2019, worked in Hovione’s R&D group as an Associate Analytical Chemist in the Physical and Performance Characterization team, responsible for the development of analytical characterization methods.


Tomás Freire

Short Bio

Tomás Freire is a junior researcher in security at AlmaScience . He is from Lisbon’s suburban area and graduated in 2018, obtaining his master’s degree in Materials engineering at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

 After this, he worked as research fellow at CENIMAT, contributing to several projects and gaining experience in nanoparticle doping and synthesis.
